Neighborship & Cohabitation

In order for everyone to live well side by side in one house, it is important to show consideration for one another. For this, a few things are important. They are often written down in the house rules (Hausordnung).

Periods of silence

The period at night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. is resting time. That means that all sounds made inside an apartment must be so low that they cannot be heard from the outside. Noise is also prohibited at lunchtime from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., as well as throughout the day on Sundays and public holidays.

Anyone who does not comply with these principles can run into problems with their neighbors, but also with the landlord or the landlady, or even with the police.

Showering, washing and vacuuming is always allowed.

Garbage separation

In Germany, everyone is obliged to separate their garbage. This is important for the environment, but it also saves money because only the residual waste bin has to be payed for. The disposal of paper, plastic and organic waste is free of charge.

In every house there are garbage bins for residual waste, paper waste and organic waste. Plastic and aluminium waste is collected in yellow bags. These four types of garbage are collected regularly.

What to throw in the paper bin? (blue or green)

Paper, newspapers, brochures, cardboard, cartons, all kinds of wrapping paper, egg boxes, pizza boxes.

Not to throw in: soiled paper (e.g. with food leftovers or fat), receipts made of thermal paper, handkerchiefs, baking paper.

The paper bin is blue in the city of Bamberg and green in the district (Landkreis).

What to throw in the organic waste bin? (brown)

Organic kitchen waste (such as bread, bread rolls, eggshell, bones, meat, fruit and vegetable, salad, and tea bags), garden waste (such as lawn, leaves, branches, flowers, and potting soil), hair, wool, feathers, small animal litter (if biodegradable).

Not to throw in: ash, dog and cat waste, disposable diapers, foil and plastic bags.

What to throw in the yellow bag?

Packaging materials with the “Green Dot”, bags, foils, tin cans, plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, aluminum lids, bowls of ready-made meals, empty beverage cartons, foam packaging, bubble wrap.

Not to throw in: styrofoam plates, buckets, packaging that is not empty, plastic sleeves for documents.

What to throw in the residual waste bin? (black)

Cigarette butts, photographs, films, light bulbs, glass wool, floppy disks, pens, vacuum cleaner bags, condoms, broken chinaware, mirror glass, candle wax, small animal litter that is not biodegradable.
Diapers also go in the residual waste bin. In order not to overcrowd that bin, you can pick up free diaper bags at the townhall.

Not to throw in: batteries, bottles and glasses, building rubble, pollutants or hazardous waste (such as paint, varnish, chemicals and solvents).

Glass and bottles

They must be thrown into the containers set up in the city and district.

Worn clothes

If clothes are not broken, they can be handed in at a store for free clothing (Kleiderkammer), so other people can continue to wear them.

There are also containers for used clothes set up in the city and district.

What to do with other kinds of waste?

Electronic household articles and electronic junk can be handed in at the shops that sell such appliances, or they can be taken to the recycling center (Recyclinghof).

The following items can also be taken to the recycling center: Problematic waste such as paint, varnish, insulating material, building rubble, plasterboard, night storage heaters, scrap metal and cables.

Staircase

Please keep in mind that you have only rented an apartment in a house, not the staircase.

It is not permitted to set up cupboards etc. in the staircase! This might be harmful if there was a fire in the house, because the staircase is the only way to exit the building. If someone trips over these cupboards, or if they catch fire, this could be dangerous for everyone in the house.
