There are different examinations and offer to help and protect the mother and her baby during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman works, there is an additional law. This Law protects pregnant women from dangers and risks in the workplace. Every woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy up to the 12th week. Before that they have to visit a counseling service. Pregnancy Support - Schwangerschaftsbegleitung

If you are pregnant, you are entitled to preventive care from a gynecologist and a midwife (Hebamme). Please take care of appointments as early as possible so that you are well looked after. The doctor carries out regular examinations to check whether the mother and child are healthy. The midwife (Hebamme) accompanies the woman during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and breastfeeding. She answers all questions about birth and prepares you for your child birth. As you are expecting your baby, you can attend courses to prepare for the childbirth. The midwife (Hebamme) explains the different techniques used in childbirth, for example water birth. The midwife (Hebamme) is also your help during birth. A doctor is only called in if there are problems. After the birth, the midwife (Hebamme) helps the family with the new situation and with the baby. She also takes care of the medical needs of the mother and the baby and checks, for example, whether the navel is healing well and whether the baby is eating enough. Here you can find your midwife (Hebamme):

You can learn to prepare yourself with movement and breathing exercises to help ease the delivery. You will also learn exercises to help you after childbirth. The courses are mostly offered by midwives and paid for by the health insurance. Just type “midwife” / “hebamme” or “Birth preparation course” / “Geburtsvorbereitungskurs” in Bamberg.

Birth

As additional preparation for the birth, you can attend events that provide information about the birth. You can also check the labour room in the hospital or the birth center. Here you can see where and how you can bring your child into the world, for example lying down, sitting down or in the water. You will also receive information on how you can have less pain when you have an epidural (epidural anesthesia). You can also give birth to your child at home with the help of the midwife.

After Giving Birth

You are not alone even after giving birth. The first 6-8 weeks (childbed) are important for you and your baby. Your body is changing again and you are building a relationship with your child. Everything is new and sometimes things don’t always work out right away. You will get help from your midwife (Hebamme) and also from other agencies. The costs will be covered by the health insurance. How to change the baby’s diaper properly? Why is the baby crying? How does breastfeeding work? Do I have enough milk? A lot of new questions can be answered. Sometimes a woman does not feel well after childbirth. When the hormones in the body go haywire and everything is just too much and different, it can lead to depression. You can always get help with any problem. In addition to your midwife, you can also get help from the counseling centers (see above).

Breastfeeding Counselling

You can have the hospital and your midwife show you how to breastfeed. In addition, there are other opportunities for information that you can use.
